Upgrade Tips

  • The HP Z440 supports a single processor configuration only.
  • Ensure that the CPU is compatible with the system's chipset and BIOS version.
  • For maximum performance, pair your CPU upgrade with sufficient cooling and compatible RAM.

How to Replace or Upgrade Your CPU

Follow these step-by-step instructions to safely replace or upgrade the CPU in your HP Z440 workstation:

  1. Turn off the system: Power down your workstation completely and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Discharge static electricity: Use an anti-static wrist strap or touch a grounded metal object to discharge any static electricity from your body.
  3. Open the case: Remove the workstation’s side panel to access the internal components.
  4. Locate the CPU: Find the CPU socket on the motherboard. It is typically covered by a heatsink and fan.
  5. Remove the heatsink: Unscrew and detach the heatsink from the CPU. Be careful not to damage any nearby components.
  6. Release the old CPU: Unlock the CPU socket lever to release the old CPU. Carefully remove it without bending any pins.
  7. Install the new CPU: Align the new CPU with the socket’s pin configuration (usually marked with an arrow or notch) and gently place it into the socket.
  8. Lock the CPU: Lower the socket lever to securely lock the CPU into place.
  9. Apply thermal paste: Apply a small amount of thermal paste to the top of the CPU for proper heat transfer to the heatsink.
  10. Reattach the heatsink: Reinstall the heatsink and fan, ensuring it is securely attached to the CPU and motherboard.
  11. Reconnect power: Plug the fan’s power cable back into the appropriate motherboard header.
  12. Close the case: Replace the workstation’s side panel and ensure all screws are tightened properly.
  13. Power on and test: Reconnect the power supply, turn on the workstation, and verify that the system boots up and recognises the new CPU.
Note: Always consult the workstation's service manual for specific instructions and compatibility details. Ensure your BIOS is up to date for the new CPU.
