HP Mini G4/G5/G6 PCs: Motherboard & AC Wattage

Note: The information below is based on in-house testing and research conducted by Bargain Hardware's technicians.

When booting HP Mini G4, G5, or G6 PCs, the required AC adapter wattage is determined by the motherboard rather than the CPU. Different motherboard variants exist across these models, with power requirements ranging from 65W to 120W. Understanding these differences is crucial to ensuring system stability and proper operation.

Motherboard Variants & Wattage Requirements

HP Mini PC motherboards come in different wattage variants, which dictate the required AC adapter:

  • 35W motherboard – Requires a 65W AC adapter
    • Typically paired with "lettered" 35W CPUs, such as the i5-8500T.
  • 65W motherboard – Requires a 90W AC adapter
    • Typically comes with a "non-letter" 65W CPU, such as the i5-8500.
    • Even if the CPU is swapped, the motherboard still requires a 90W AC adapter.
  • 95W motherboard (G5 & G6 only) – Requires a 120W AC adapter
    • G5 and G6 models also support 95W CPUs, which necessitate a higher wattage motherboard and power supply.

Identifying a 65W vs 90W Motherboard

To determine whether a motherboard requires a 65W or 90W AC adapter, check the board for the following components:

HP PC 65W Motherboard

65W motherboard: Lacks the extra MOSFETs and choke coil found on 90W boards.

HP PC 90W Motherboard

90W motherboard: Includes three additional MOSFETs and an extra choke coil.
